After a blank on Thursday night, where i got snapped up by a catfish (to be expected on light mono hooklengths) and pulled out of another fish, i made amends early on Friday evening. Reasoning that the warm SW wind might have dragged the fish far up into the shallow water to my left i cast out a 2 bait stringer in that direction. The other rod was placed where i had caught my last fish and baited with 10 freebies and a couple on a stringer.
Before dark the left hand rod ripped off and i was into a fish that seemed intent on kiting as fast as possible. After a wonderful fight on my light tackle i landed this long 15lb 15oz mirror. One of the things that i love about fishing Rouge is that the fish are so different to those that you generally find here in France - they have lovely dark colours and interesting scale patterns. I guess this is some artifact of their heritage as descendants of the original fish from the early 90’s which were largely river fish purchased from the Dordogne water authority.
The other side (slightly dodgy photo because my camera was too far away!)
The rest of the night was quiet - even on the third rod i had put out for the Catfish, but i was chuffed to have put another fish on the bank in difficult weather.
The following day i was working at the lakes burning some of the huge amount of trees and branches that we have to cut every year from the lake. Having finished early, and with an hour before i was due elsewhere i headed for my brolly and chucked the rods out (complete with last night’s bait) before settling down for a nap. However, i had barely taken my boots off before the right hand rod ripped away and i found this lovely 12lber attached!
It kind of makes all those blank session look a bit silly really doesn’t it ![]()

Hi Will, Hope the weather is getting better down south. those are some nice fish you have had there lately. Some of my mates have already been out here to fish a week. Despite the difficult weather, and it’s not over yet they have managed to bank a few good carp.
I’m looking forward to getting my own rods out soon.
Best regards

Cheers Gareth,
it’s been lovely to get out and really give it some. I surprised that I’ve not had more of the bigger fish in the lake, but perhaps they only come out for paying customers eh?
This is a lovely time of year to be on the bank. I wish you the best of luck when you do get out, and i’ll look forward to reading all about it!
Kind regards
Will
